The Tampa Bay Rays finished 4th in the East Division of the American League at the end of the 2015 MLB season, with 80 wins and 82 losses. Chris Archer, one of the team’s pitchers, set the record for the most strikeouts for the individual franchise in a single season with 252 strikeouts. Archer is playing for the Rays again in the 2016 MLB season.
After a few years of back and forth, the Tampa Bay Devil Rays began to play major league baseball in the 1998 season. It wasn’t until after the 2007 season when Stuart Sternberg changed the team’s name from the Devil Rays to the Rays. This name change seemed to bring in more success for the team, and in 2008 they won their first American League East Championship and their first pennant, though they did not win the World Series. Three teams maintain rivalries with the Tampa Bay Rays: the Boston Red Sox, the New York Yankees, and the Miami Marlins. The team was the center of the movie “The Rookie,” which told the story of 35-year-old Jim Morris, a high school coach who could pitch 98 miles per hour. Morris played two seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays, as a relief pitcher.
The Tampa Bay area includes Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, and Bradenton, though the Tampa Bay Rays’ ballpark is located in St. Petersburg. Tropicana Field is also home to the Ted Williams Museum and Hitters Hall of Fame. Located near Historic Kenwood, the park is just south of an array of restaurants and bars.
