The New York Yankees enjoyed a fairly strong 2015 regular MLB season, with the second highest PCT in the East Division of the American League (.537). They finished the regular season with 87 wins and 75 losses, placing 4th in the American League and 9th in MLB (American League and National League combined).
The New York Yankees have a long history dating back to 1901, and have been home to such baseball legends as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, Mickey Mantle, and Yogi Berra, to name a few. Back in 1901, they were called the Baltimore Orioles (different from the modern team of the same name). In 1903 they moved to New York City and became known as the New York Highlanders. They didn’t officially become the Yankees until 1913, though they were unofficially called by that name as early as 1904. The New York Yankees have won 18 Division titles, 40 American League pennants, and 27 World Series Championships. They hold the MLB record for the most won of all three of those distinctions.
When they first moved to New York in 1903, the team played at Hilltop Park. The location of Hilltop in Upper Manhattan may have contributed in part to the naming of the team as the “Highlanders.” They played there until 1912, and in 1913, moved to the Polo Grounds, which they shared with the team known then as the New York Giants (baseball, not football). They stayed at the Polo Grounds until 1922 when their inclusion in the World Series earned them an invitation from the Giants to find a new home. The first Yankee Stadium was built in the Bronx, in time for the 1923 season. The Yankees played there for 50 straight years, and again from 1976-2008, before the second Yankee Stadium was built in 2009. The team still plays there. It’s worth noting that the first Yankee Stadium was groundbreaking in that it was the first triple-deck ballpark in MLB, and could seat 58,000 people.
The Yankees, like other MLB teams, have rivalries. The Boston Red Sox and the New York Mets are two of the Yankees’ biggest rivalries. Will the Yankees make it to the World Series?
