The New York Mets enjoyed a successful 2015 MLB Season. They won 10 homestand games—straight. Only seven teams have done this (now including the Mets) since the year 1900. They won the NL East Division title and a pennant. They won awards, too—Matt Harvey, a pitcher for the Mets, won the NL Comeback Player of the Year Award. Yoenis Cespedes won the AL Gold Glove Award for his performance as left outfielder. In the 2015 regular MLB season, the New York Mets won 90 games and lost 72, and made it to the World Series, though they were defeated there by the Kansas City Royals.

The NY Mets were founded in 1962 as the New York Metropolitans in an effort to bring the National League back to the city after the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants both moved to California. As a result, the Mets’ colors are blue and orange—taken to honor both of the teams the Mets replaced. (Those also happen to be the colors in the city flag.) In 1969, the Mets were known as the “Miracle Mets” because of their performance, ultimately winning the World Series against the Baltimore Orioles. Since their founding, they’ve won two World Series, 5 NL pennants, and 6 NL East Division titles. They’ve appeared in five World Series, which amounts to more than any MLB expansion team. One such year was 2000, when the Mets faced off against one of their biggest rivals—the New York Yankees—in a Subway World Series. The Mets did not win the World Series that year, but fans came out on top when they got to see the Amazin’ Mets play in the series at home.

When the New York Mets first started to play in 1962, their home stadium was the famed Polo Grounds. From 1964 through 2008, they played at Shea Stadium, named for the man who was largely responsible for the founding of the team. Citi Field, their current ballpark, opened for the 2009 season.
