More Information about the Phoenix Suns

As the NBA team for Phoenix, AZ, the Suns play in the Western Conference Pacific Division as the only team not based in California. Currently, they play at Talking Stick Resort Arena and are the only Arizona-based team to be exclusively associated with the city.

Background

The Suns began as an NBA expansion team in 1968, owned by Karl Eller and funded by Don Pitt, Don Diamond, Bhavik Darji, Marvin Meyer, and Richard Bloch. For years, the Suns were the only professional-team in the Phoenix, until the Arizona Cardinals relocated from St. Louis. Initially, many doubted the Suns’ longevity, as Phoenix wasn’t considered a strong NBA market.

The Suns experienced a modest degree of success in its first decade, but the team saw its wins trail off through the 1980s. Attracting Kevin Johnson in the late ‘80s from the Cleveland Cavaliers helped the team through the early 1990s, and his success then passed down to Charles Barkley, who was traded from the Philadelphia 76ers in the mid-‘90s. Barkley would eventually win an MVP Award while playing for the Suns.

Yet, during this period, the Suns’ strengths centered around one or two players, and their performance suffered once Barkley departed. Steve Nash turned things around once he came on in 2004 and gave them a steadier streak, until he left in 2012.

Success

The Phoenix Suns, believe it or not, have the fourth-best winning percentage of the NBA, at 55 percent, and have had 19 seasons with 50 or more wins. Yet, in spite of the high caliber of players passing through, they have yet to win an NBA Championship.

So far, the Suns have appeared at the playoffs 29 times, and have gone to the Western Conference Finals nine times. In the process, they took home six division titles, in 1981, 1993, 1995, 2005, 2006, and 2007. Additionally, they made it to the NBA Finals twice, in 1976 and 1993.
