More about the Minnesota Timberwolves

The Minnesota Timberwolves is an American professional basketball team based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The team competes in the NBA as a member of the league’s Western Conference Northwest Division.

The team itself was first created after the NBA granted one of its four new expansion teams to original owners Harvey Ratner and Marf Wolfenson to begin play for the 1989-90 season. At the time, they created a “name the team” contest and two finalists were eventually picked: Timberwolves or Polars. In the end, the team went with “Timberwolves” after asking the 842 city councils in Minnesota.

During the first season, the Timberwolves largely played their home games at the Met Center and the much larger Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome. In fact, the team was able to draw in a crowd of 49,551 during one of their games in 1990.

During their second season, the Timberwolves moved to the Target Center, which became their permanent home. While they were met with several losses during their first season, they improved in their second, finishing 29-53.

In 2014, the team set a franchise record for points in a regular season game. They won 143-107 over the Los Angeles Lakers. This marked the team’s first season-series win over the Lakers since the 2005-06 season. But in the 2014-15 season, the Timberwolves had a 16-66 record and missed the playoffs for the 11th consecutive year.

During the past few years, the Timberwolves have made a few changes. Flip Saunders was promoted to head coach during the 2014-15 season, but later delegated his coaching position to Sam Mitchell. When Saunders died after battling with Hodgkin’s lymphoma, Mitchell took over as head coach.

In 2015, Kevin Garnett returned to the team. And in 2016, Tom Thibodeau was signed to be the head coach of the Timberwolves and head of basketball operations.
