The Golden State Warriors are an American professional basketball team based out of California. The Golden State Warriors were first founded in 1946 as the Philadelphia Warriors. Owned by Peter A. Tyrrell, they were named after an old basketball team that played in the American Basketball League in 1925.

In 1962, the Philadelphia Warriors then became the San Francisco Warriors, moving to California. Then right before the 1971-72 season, they adopted their current name, the Golden State Warriors, in order to suggest that they represented the entire state of California.

In 2015, the Warriors began their season by winning their first 24 games. This eclipsed their previous best start in NBA history. In fact, the Warriors surpassed the 1969-70 New York Knicks for best road start in NBA history at 14-0. The Warriors also won 28 consecutive regular-season games dating back to the 2014-15 season. They also set an NBA record 54-straight regular season home game winning streak. The previous record was 44 games, held by the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls.

There have been many changes to the team roster through the years. Recently on July 4, 2016, Kevin Durant announced he would leave the Oklahoma City Thunder to sign a two-year contract with the Golden State Warriors. This made the Warriors the favorites to win the NBA championship.
