A satirical musical by Trey Parker, Robert Lopez, and Matt Stone, The Book of Mormon started its Broadway run in 2011 and continues to be a popular stage production, both in New York and for its various touring shows.
Background
Parker and Stone, the creators of South Park, and Lopez, behind musical Avenue Q, started developing The Book of Mormon as early as 2003, over the same period they worked on Team America: World Police. Eventually, workshops brought it to life in 2008, and three years later, it made its official debut at New York’s Eugene O’Neill Theatre.
As a concept, the musical focuses on two Mormon missionaries who have just finished their studies and have been assigned to spread the Book of Mormon’s scriptures at a Ugandan village. Yet, upon their arrival, they find the locals aren’t interested in their teachings and, rather, are focused on other life-threatening conflicts at hand, such as war and AIDS. In response, they stray away from the Book, combining it with other facets of pop culture, to get them more engaged.
Upon opening, the musical received nearly widespread critical praise, as well as sold-out shows. Further, it set record-breaking ticket sales for the Eugene O’Neill Theatre, went onto spawn a West End production, as well as two national U.S. tours, and saw its soundtrack remain in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart for several weeks.
