More Information about the Pittsburgh Penguins

As Pittsburgh’s NHL team, the Penguins play as part of the Eastern Conference’s Metropolitan Division. While their winning seasons have been uneven over the past few decades, 2016 saw them take home yet another Stanley Cup when they defeated the San Jose Sharks.

Background

What many don’t realize is, the Penguins aren’t Pittsburgh’s first pro hockey team. The NHL’s Pirates played there from 1925 to 1930, and from 1936 to 1967, the American Hockey League Hornets, a minor league franchise, remained a stronghold.

Yet, a campaign to bring the NHL back to Pittsburgh started in 1965, and two years later, the league granted the city one of its expansion teams. In the process, Civic Arena increased its capacity by 2,000 seats.

The Penguins had a few shaky early years, but by the 1970s, they started reaching the playoffs. The ‘80s saw them mired in financial difficulties and losing seasons, and because of these factors, the franchise nearly folded over this period.

But, the ‘80s also saw Mario Lemieux come on board, giving the team its first star player and turning the Penguins around over the next two decades. Lemieux, along with a lineup overhaul not longer after his introduction, gave the team a steadier streak of wins. While he retired by the late ‘90s, Lemieux soon went on to partially own the Penguins and then returned in the 2000s as a player, being one of the league’s few individuals to do both.

The 2000s, too, had a few uneventful years, until the Penguins drafted Evgeni Malkin in 2006. By 2008, they became a fixture at the playoffs. Twice since then, they took home the Stanley Cup.

Over these few years, too, attendance went up at games. As a result, after 40 years at the Civic Arena, the Penguins switched their home stadium to the Consol Energy Center for the 2010-11 season.

Successes

Since their beginning, the Pittsburgh Penguins have qualified for five Stanley Cups, winning them in 1991, 1992, 2009, and 2016.

Along with these wins, they came out on top in the Conference Championships in the 1990-91, 1991-92, 2007-08, 2008-09, and 2015-16 seasons. Further, they won Atlantic Division Championships eight times since the 1990-91 season.
