More Information about the New Jersey Devils

As New Jersey’s only major league team, the Devils have been part of the Metropolitan Division of the Eastern Conference since 2013 and have seen their performance improve over the years.

Background

Now based out of Newark, NJ, the Devils started as the Kansas City Scouts in Missouri in 1974. Two years later, they made a move to Denver, where they became the Colorado Rockies. During these early years, their performance could be best described as poor to mediocre, as they never placed higher than fifth in their division and never got to a Stanley Cup playoff.

By 1982, the team moved to East Rutherford, NJ, where they played at the Brendan Byrne Arena. Although their success remained the same for a few years, the Devils’ performance started looking up once president and general manager Lou Lamoriello came on board. From 1988 to 2012, the Devils made the playoffs nearly every year, except for three, and finished with a winning season from 1992 to 2010.

After playing in East Rutherford for over 20 years, the Devils moved to Newark’s Prudential Center, which they’ve called home since then.

During the Devils’ time in New Jersey, they developed rivalries with the New York Rangers, one of the three teams making up the Metropolitan Division, and with the Philadelphia Flyers.

Success

With Lamoriello giving the team a stronger direction and attracting better players, the Devils won the Atlantic Division regular season title nine times since 1982.

Then, cementing them as one of the NHL’s stronger teams, they made it to the Stanley Cup five times since 1982, with the 2011-12 season being their most recent appearance. Out of all times they’ve played, they won the Cup in 1994-95, 1999-00, and 2002-03.
