More about the Detroit Red Wings

The Detroit Red Wings are a professional ice hockey team based in Detroit, Michigan. One of the original six teams of the National Hockey League, the team was founded in 1926 and has since been playing and winning championships.

The team was first called the Cougars, and played its first season in Windsor, Ontario at the Border Cities Arena in 1926. During their next season, they moved into the new Detroit Olympia, which remained their home arena until 1979.

The team first made the Stanley Cup playoffs in 1929, though they were then outscored by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

In 1930, the Cougars were renamed the Falcons, and then were finally renamed the Red Wings after being purchased by James E. Norris in 1932. Then in 1934, the Red Wings made the Stanley Cup Finals for the first time. Then, they finally won their first Stanley cup in 1936, beating out Toronto in four games. They then repeated as Stanley Cup champions in 1937 when they won against the Rangers in five full games.

Following 1953 after a playoff upset at the hands of the Bruins, the Red Wings won back-to-back Stanley Cups. And while the Red Wings experienced a bit of a downturn, they then began winning against starting in the early 90s. In 2007-08, the Red Wings made it to the playoffs, where they faced the Nashville Predators. They eventually came back in the series on their way to winning the 11th Stanley Cup.

So far in 2016, the Red Wings have lost 3-2 to the New York Rangers. However, they narrowly made the playoffs for a 25th consecutive season. They lost the first two games of their 2016 opening round playoff series with Tampa Bay. They ended up winning their third game at home, but then wound up losing the series, four games to one.
