More Information about the Boston Bruins

As one of the original U.S. hockey teams, the Boston Bruins are part of the NHL’s Eastern Conference Atlantic Division. Since their inception, they’ve won six Stanley Cups – the fourth-highest record out of the league and second-highest in the U.S. While their home stadium has changed multiple times, they currently play at Boston’s TD Garden and have done so since 1995.

Background

Part of the Original Six, the Bruins were one of the NHL’s first U.S.-based expansion teams. The Bruins started playing in 1924 and are now the NHL’s third-oldest U.S. team.

The team had to find its footing on the ice during its first few years. But, after the Western Hockey League disbanded, the Bruins had their pick of its players, which ultimately improved their record and led them to the Stanley Cup for the first time.

However, it wasn’t until 1966, when Bobby Orr came on board, that the Bruins had a truly standout player. Orr went to take them to the Stanley Cup in 1970 after a 29-year absence. That year, they won the Cup to the St. Louis Blues.

This streak didn’t let up through the 1980s, when the Bruins got to the playoffs every year of that decade. By the 1990s, on the other hand, the Bruins saw their luck dissipate: Throughout that decade and the 2000s, they didn’t get to the second round of the playoffs, until winning the Stanley Cup again in the 2010-11 season.

Success

The Bruins’ six Stanley Cup championships – in the 1928-29, 1938-39, and 1940-41 seasons early on and, later, in 1969-70, 1971-72, and 2010-11 – tie them with the Blackhawks for the fourth-most wins out of any NHL team and the second in the U.S.

Along with these Cups, the Bruins won Conference Championships in 1987-88, 1989-90, 2010-11, and 2012-13 years. Further, since the 1927-28 season, the team has won 25 division championships, with the last being the 2013-14 season.
