As D.C.’s professional football team, the Washington Redskins are part of the National Football Conference (NFC) East division. Currently, they play at FedExField in Landover, Maryland, and hold their training sessions in Ashburn, Virginia.

Background

The Redskins started as the Boston Braves in 1932, but five years later, they relocated to the Washington, D.C., area and changed their name.

While now considered one of the NFL’s most valuable franchises, their success varied greatly in the early years. Their start was rather auspicious: From 1936 to 1945, they went to the NFL Championship six times and won two out of those instances.

But, from 1946 to 1970, the team didn’t earn a single post-season appearance. In fact, its lineup performed so poorly over that period that, from 1956 to 1968, the Redskins didn’t win a single season.

By the early 1980s, things started looking up. Between 1982 and 1991, the team appeared in the post-season seven times, got four Conference titles, and won three out of the four Super Bowls where they appeared.

The team’s success has only grown since, and now, the Redskins are valued at $2.4 billion and had the highest record for seat attendance in 2007.

In spite of its early history, the Redskins are now one of five NFL franchises to have 600 regular season and post-season wins – a record they achieved in 2015.

Out of this total, they have won five NFL Championships: Two before the NFL-AFL merger, and Super Bowls XVII, XXII, and XXVI. Additionally, the team has 14 NFL divisional titles and has won six NFL Conference Championships.
