More Information on the Pittsburgh Steelers

With Steelers Nation, the Pittsburgh Steelers have an extensive fan base stretching back decades behind them. And, with multiple Super Bowl and AFC Championship wins to their name, that popularity will no doubt continue to grow.

Their History

The Steelers are the oldest team to compete in the American Football Conference (AFC) division. Founded in 1933 as the Pittsburgh Pirates and owned by Art Rooney, the team went off to a weak start. The Steelers name stuck in 1939, and eventually, by 1947, the team finally made it to the playoffs, where they lost to the Philadelphia Eagles. With the AFL-NFL merger in 1970, the Steelers became one of three original NFL teams to switch to the AFC, with the other two being the Cleveland Browns and Baltimore Colts. Around this time, Coach Chuck Nolt guided the Steelers toward their first series of successes, first by drafting stronger players. During this decade, they became the only NFL team in history to win four Super Bowls in six years. The Steelers hit a lull in the ‘80s, but their prowess on the field picked up again the early 1990s, once Bill Cowher began coaching. From there, Mike Tomlin picked up in 2007, becoming the youngest coach to ever win a Super Bowl and the first for Pittsburgh without a losing season.

Wins

As one of the most successful NFL teams, the Steelers have six Super Bowl titles to their name and have hosted 11 conference championships – more than any other NFL team. Further, they’ve tied the New England Patriots and the Denver Broncos for winning the most AFC Championships, and the San Francisco 49ers with the most conference championships played in. Additionally, they’re tied with the Patriots, Broncos, and Dallas Cowboys for the most Super Bowl appearances. The Steelers last played a Super Bowl in 2011. Currently, the team plays its home games in Heinz Field, after calling Three Rivers Stadium home for 31 years.
