Vince Papale: Philly’s Hometown Hero

A Philadelphia native, Vince Papale has one of the most amazing football stories. Vince was a great high school athlete who went from bartender to member of the Philadelphia Eagles. His perseverance and charisma helped him make what seemed to be an impossible dream come true.

The eventual NFL player would only play one year of varsity football while he was in high school. Vince was actually a standout track athlete at Interboro High School. He was a top pole vaulter in Philadelphia entering his senior year, finishing fourth in the state championships. Papale also was exceptional at the triple jump and long jump. His efforts in Track and Field would earn him a scholarship to play at St. Joseph’s College.

Vince wouldn’t play anymore football until six years after graduating college. He was bartending and substitute teaching when he decided to try out for the Philadelphia Bell, a team in the newly formed World Football League. His first year with the team he would catch nine passes for 121 yards, which was enough to catch the attention of Head Coach Dick Vermeil and the Philadelphia Eagles. He was personally invited to an open try-out for the Eagles, however about 800 people also came looking for a shot to be in the NFL. Coach Vermeil took serious notice of Papale after he ran a 4.5 in the forty yard dash. Vince would end up making the team and become the NFL’s oldest rookie with no college experience at the age of 30.

After making the team, Vince would be a standout on special teams. He was even voted Special Teams Captain in 1978 by his teammates. Papale would play 41 out of 44 regular season games in his career, recording two fumble recoveries, 20 tackles, and one catch. His career would be cut short by a shoulder injury during the preseason of the 1979 season. His amazing story was made into a successful movie and Vince was an inspiration to everyone in Philadelphia.
