The Oakland Raiders are a professional American football team that can be found in Oakland, California. While they started playing in 1960, they only became a part of the NFL in 1970. Since then, they’ve competed in both home and away games during the season.

During its very first three seasons, the team struggled both on and off the field. But things changed in 1963 when Al Davis was appointed to the position of head coach. By 1967, the Raiders had reached the postseason for the first time, and they won their first and only AFL title that year.

In the 1970s, the Raiders became more notable. They won six division titles and played in six AFC championship games. And in 1976, the team won its first championship during Super Bowl XI. And in 1980, the Raiders won a second championship by defeating the Philadelphia Eagles during Super Bowl XV.

The team relocated to Los Angeles in 1982. In 1983, the Raiders managed to win the Super Bowl XVIII after competing against the Washington Redskins. This marked their third and, currently, their last championship.

In the late 1990s, the Raiders experienced a brief resurgence. This ended with a 2002 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneer during Super Bowl XXXVII. Since then, the team has struggled. Though it improved significantly in 2010 and 2011, the team has not reached the playoffs or reached a winning record in 13 seasons.

Most recently in 2016, the team managed to have a winning season record for the first time since 2002. They beat the Carolina Panthers on Week 12 at 35 to 32. The team is especially known for its extensive fan base and distinctive team culture. In addition, 14 former members of the team have been placed within the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
