Background

Now part of the National Football Conference (NFC) East division, the Giants were one of five teams to join the NFL in 1925. As all others have disappeared or moved on, the Giants are the oldest original NFL team and also the longest-running in the Northeast.

Initially, cities gave both their professional baseball and football franchises the same names. Because of this, the team changed its name to the New York Football Giants in 1937 as a way to distinguish itself. Yet, while the baseball franchise moved to San Francisco in 1957, still keeping its name, “Football Giants” continued to stick for the New York team.

Additionally, the Giants’ longevity encompasses its rivalry with the Philadelphia Eagles. As one of the longest running in the NFC, their competition goes all the way back to 1933.

But, in spite of this, both teams have several conference appearances. The Giants appeared at the NFL Eastern conference six times from 1955 to 1970. After the NFL merger, they played in the NFC conference four times, in 1986, 1990, 2000, 2007, and 2011.

Believe it or not, the Giants rank third of all NFL franchises in titles accumulated, with eight earned over the years. They received four before the NFL-AFL merger, with the first in 1927, and won four Super Bowls. In addition to this legacy, they’ve made 31 playoff appearances and have been in 19 championships.

Further, much of the Giants’ success can be attributed to its players. As a result, 28 of its top performers have since been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
