More Information about the Music of the ’50s and ‘60s

Pop music as we currently think of it was largely created in the 1950s. Vocal-driven “classic pop” began to dominate the charts, emphasizing lyrics and vocal performances over the orchestration of the big band and jazz age. This trend came to its zenith with the widespread popularity of doo wop, a genre known for its complex vocal harmonies and storytelling lyrics.

Rock and roll also came into its own in the 1950s after slowly evolving in the American south throughout the 1940s and early ‘50s. From Les Paul’s electric guitar to Elvis Presley’s swinging hips, Chuck Berry’s fusion of showmanship and musicality, and Link Wray’s pioneering use of distortion – everything rock took for granted in decades to come owes its origins to the 1950s.

While rock and roll continued evolving into psychedelic rock, heavy metal, other genres through the 1960s, the pop charts became dominated by R&B and soul from the likes of Motown and Stax records. Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross and the Supremes, the Temptations, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Stevie Wonder, Booker T, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, and others all came to prominence in the 1960s.
